An Employer Identification Number (EIN)

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number that the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) gives in the following format: 00-0000000. The IRS requires this number to identify taxpayers who must file various business tax profits. EIN are used by employers, sole proprietors, corporations, limited liability companies (LLC), partnerships, non-profit associations, and trusts, estates of decedents, governmental agencies, certain individuals, and other business entities. All U.S. banks require a business entity to provide their EIN prior to opening a commercial account.

You should use a SS-4 Form to apply for an employer identification number (EIN). In addition to this form there are instructions on it’s completing. You may apply for an EIN both by mail and by telephone. You can get an EIN instantly by calling Tele-TIN number of your state service center or sending completed SS-4 Form directly to the service center to receive your EIN by mail. It is so simple, isn’t it? But that is only if you have already a SSN and if you are currently a US resident. If you are a non-US citizen it is a real headache to obtain this number. First you need to fill the W7 form to obtain an ITIN (SSN equivalent) then the IRS will convert this number into your EIN. It can take up to twelve weeks to get your number!
